Funding Opportunities

Center for International Social Sciences Research Faculty Research Fellowships 

CISSR provides funding for faculty research projects at any stage of development. Funds may be used for a wide range of research-related activities, including field and archival research, purchasing data, research assistance, hosting a visiting collaborator on a short-term basis, or organizing a conference for publishing a special issue or edited volume.

Center for International Social Sciences Research Book Workshop & Monograph Enhancement Awards 

The Center for International Social Science Research (CISSR) invites University of Chicago faculty to apply for book workshop and/or monograph enhancement awards to support scholarly manuscripts in preparation for publication. All University of Chicago faculty are eligible, provided their manuscripts 1) focus on international, transnational, or global issues and 2) use social scientific methods.

Chicago Forum Conference Support 

This supports University of Chicago faculty, academic appointees, and graduate students in organizing academic conferences and convenings that advance discussion on free inquiry and expression.

International Institute for Research in Paris (IIRP) Grants  

These grants support collaborations between members of the University research community and creative, scholarly, and research communities in institutions across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.  

Amount: Up to $30,000 for two-year projects

IRC Discovery CNRS-UChicago International Research Center for Fundamental Discovery  

IRC Discovery is a joint research center between the University of Chicago and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). IRC Discovery strengthens partnership between scholars at two of the world’s leading research institutions and leverages both institutions’ robust networks and large-scale investments in scientific infrastructure to address some of the world’s biggest questions.

Neubauer Collegium Collaborative Research & Visiting Fellow Awards  

Neubauer Collegium supports significant collaborative research projects informed by a humanistic perspective. The Collegium encourages experimentation in the design of collaborative work. They also supports visiting fellows and scholars who will contribute to collaborative research more broadly at the university.  

Amount: $5,000 - $300,000

UChicago Global Faculty Awards 

These grants supports events and research with a collaborative element in mainland China, Hong Kong and East Asia, South Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

UChicago Kiphart Center for Global Health and Social Development – Fund for Research and Innovation 

This fund was established to incubate cutting-edge research and interventions that address pressing global health and social development challenges. The Fund emphasizes multi-disciplinary collaboration. There are no geographical limitations to where projects may be implemented, but priority given to projects in low- and middle-income countries. 

Amount: up to $50,000

Women's Board Grants 

The University of Chicago Women’s Board is a dynamic, diverse network of members committed to advancing the University of Chicago’s mission of rigorous inquiry through intellectual engagement, philanthropy, and community building. 

Amount: Up to $100,000 

Deadline: January (anticipated)  

France’s National Center for Scientific Research funds international research collaborations between French scholars/laboratories and foreign scholars/laboratories. The applications and calls for proposals are done through CNRS. All of these mechanisms are submitted on a rolling basis.

International Research Projects 

IRPs support established research collaborations over a 5-year period through the funding of short- and medium-term scientific exchanges, such as international workshops, seminars.  

Amount: €50,000 - €75,000 

 

International Research Networks 

An International Research Network (IRN) structures an international scientific community around a shared theme or research infrastructure. It promotes the organization of international workshops and seminars, or thematic schools, organized by network partners in France and abroad. It brings together researchers from one or more French laboratories, including at least one CNRS laboratory, and several partner laboratories abroad. 

Amount: €50,000 - €75,000

International Emerging Actions 

An International Emerging Action (IEA) is a “PI-to-PI” project whose aim is to explore new fields of research and new international partnerships through short-term missions, the organization of working meetings, and the initiation of initial joint research based on a shared scientific project. These actions run for 2 years. 

Amount: €10,000 - €14,000 

 

International Research Laboratory 

An International Research Laboratory is an international research facility where research activities are carried out jointly around shared scientific axes. It structures the significant and lasting presence of scientists from a limited number of French and foreign research institutions (one foreign partner country only) in an identified location. These programs run for five years.

European Research Council Grants 

Researchers working at institutions outside the EU are eligible for grants through the European Research Council (ERC), provided the research they undertake will be carried out in an EU member state or associated country. The ERC was established by the European Union in 2007 and, through the Horizon Europe program, has a budget of over €16 billion.

  • Starting Grants for researchers with 2-7 years of experience since completing the PhD 

    Amount: Up to €1.5M for a period of 5 years 

    Deadline: October 14 

  • Consolidator Grants for researchers with 7-12 years of experience since the PhD 

    Amount: Up to €2M for a period of 5 years

  • Advanced Grants for established researchers with a track-record of significant achievements 

    Amount: Up to €2.5M for a period of 5 years

  • Synergy Grants for groups of 2-4 researchers, who, in addition to excellence, must demonstrate that the project cannot be carried out by a single PI alone. This project can take place at an institution outside of the EU. 

    Amount: Up to €10M for a period of 6 years, with up to an additional €4M to cover certain eligible costs Deadline: November 5 

 

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions  

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions are the European Union’s reference programme for doctoral education and postdoctoral training. These are opportunities to fund joint PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows. 

 

Horizon Europe Opportunities   

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding program for research and innovation. Following the Multiannual Financial Framework Midterm Review (MTR) decision, the indicative funding amount for Horizon Europe for the period 2021-2027 is EUR 93.5 billion.   • Artificial Intelligence for knowledge valorisation HORIZON-CL4-INDUSTRY-2025-01-HUMAN-62 

    Swiftly valorise research results by market, society or policy making, powered by AI; Tackle the innovation paradox in Europe, by supporting R&I actors to valorise their research through relevant AI tools; Use AI to deliver valorisation roadmaps, business plans, partnerships and guide market uptake strategies in at least 100 use cases of research-based innovative solutions addressing societal challenges.

Albertine Foundation Transatlantic Research Partnership Grants 

Grants for collaborative projects between US- and France-based researchers, specifically geared towards early-career scholars who are within seven years of receiving their Ph.D. Funds projects related to one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with applications accepted in the humanities and social sciences.  

Amount: up to $20,000 over a period of two years

Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action  - Vulnerability and Resilience Management for Socio-Environmental Systems in Exposed Territories (Resilience) 

The Belmont Forum is an international partnership that mobilizes funding of environmental change research and accelerates its delivery to remove critical barriers to sustainability.

British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants 

The BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences. These awards, up to £10,000 in value and tenable for up to 24 months, are provided to cover the cost of the expenses arising from a defined research project. 

Amount: up to £10,000

British Library Endangered Archives Programme 

The Endangered Archives Programme offers approximately 30 grants each year to enable researchers to identify and preserve culturally important archives through digitization. The archival material must derive outside of North America and Western Europe.

CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars 

The CIFAR Global Scholars Program offers early-career researchers the opportunity to develop and lead high-risk, high-reward interdisciplinary research, expand their professional networks and receive focused leadership training in their pivotal first years as independent investigators. These experiences accelerate the rise of research leaders who are positioned to drive new discoveries and open new fields of inquiry.

Endangered Languages Documentation Programme

Future Earth, Cross-Cutting Initiatives Grant Program 

Future Earth is a global network of scientists, researchers, and innovators collaborating for a more sustainable planet.Cross-Cutting Initiatives are integrative & synthesis activities that foster or require collaborations between Future Earth entities and/or facilitate research co-creation and transdisciplinary. Original proposals and those addressing priorities identified by the Future Earth Assembly are eligible for consideration.

International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) – Research Grants 

The IHRA Grant Program welcomes applications from all over the world and from any organization or institution in the field of education, remembrance, and research of the Holocaust and the genocide of the Roma.

Japan Foundation - Support programme for translation and publication on Japan 

This program is designed to provide partial financial support for overseas publishers intending to translate and publish works originally written in Japanese. The program aims to foster better understanding of Japan by encouraging overseas publishers to translate and publish Japanese works. The grant covers part of the translation and/or publication costs (e.g. costs for paper, typesetting, platemaking, printing, and binding).

Laerdal Foundation, Advancing Global Cardiac and Maternal Health 

The Laerdal Foundation supports global health research aimed at improving maternal and neonatal outcomes, as well as emergency cardiac care. Funded projects often focus on training, implementation science, or scalable interventions in low-resource settings. Grants may support clinical simulations, midwife education, or public health infrastructure that improves survival rates for mothers and newborns. Applicants must demonstrate partnerships with local health systems, measurable outcomes, and alignment with global health goals.

Nordic Institute in Greenland - Nordic Arctic Programme 2025-2027 

The Nordic Institute in Greenland and the Nordic Council of Ministers invites applications for the Nordic Arctic cooperation program. This supports projects by individuals, organizations and other groups for the benefit of sustainable development in the Arctic. Projects must contribute to the planet, people, prosperity and partnerships in the Arctic. US researchers can be a Co-PI

Regional Studies Association - Research network grant scheme 

The RSA welcomes research from any discipline contributing to advancing our understandings of regions and regional development. Key characteristics of research in the RSA portfolio is research that has impact, asks critical questions about data and methods, and pushes the scientific frontiers of theoretical and conceptual development. A Research Network proposal can link to one or more of the Association’s research themes.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows, 2026-2027 

The RWJF Health Policy Fellows program supports RWJF’s vision by creating a highly effective community of health policy leaders committed to advancing health across the country. The program provides midcareer professionals with the nation’s most comprehensive learning experience at the intersection of health, science, and policy in Washington, D.C. The foundation seeks applicants with deep experience and subject matter expertise as health professionals, behavioral and social scientists, and others with an interest in health and its drivers. AHRC and SSHRC invite expressions of interest to attend a humanities-led, interdisciplinary research sandpit putting humanities insights and methodologies at the heart of artificial intelligence (AI) tech design.

The Cross-border Conflict Evidence, Policy and Trends (XCEPT) research program brings together world-leading experts and local researchers to examine conflict-affected borderlands, how conflicts connect across borders, and the drivers of violent and peaceful behavior.

Yves Rocher Foundation Terre de Femmes International Prize 

Recognizes women spearheading nonprofit projects focused on protecting nature, encompassing areas such as ecosystem preservation, environmental restoration, coastal processes, and limnology to advance sustainable environmental conservation efforts.
